- communism: ppl looked to strong leaders to fight the threat of world revolution
- isolationism: the usa stayed out of world affairs, so britain and france were not strong enough to oppose the large numbers of foreign dictators

- he wanted to overturn the treaty of versailles
- he wanted rearmament for germany
- he wanted all german speaking people to be united in a german reich. this idea was known as GROSSDEUTSCHLAND.
- destroy communism
- expand germany‘s territory by taking land by people he saw as inferior, such as the slavs. this expansion would provide LEBENSRAUM.
