CT2 Flashcards
What does NGO stand for?
Non-Governmental Organisation
Why did the NGOs decide on goats?
They:
- Manure
- Kids (babies)
- Meat
- Milk
-Skins
What is the inner core?
The hot, solid centre of the earth
What is the outer core?
The liquid layer surrounding the inner core
What is the Mantle?
The thick layer of magma
What is the crust?
The thin layer of side rock making up the outer shell of the earth
What is the thickness of the oceanic tectonic plate?
6-10km
What is the composition of the oceanic tectonic plate?
Basalt
What is the density of the oceanic tectonic plate?
Dense
What is the thickness of the continental tectonic plate?
60+ km
What is the composition of the continental tectonic plate?
Granite
What is the density of the continental tectonic plate?
Less dense
What does the theory of convection suggest?
that magma is rising in the mantle as it is heated and then sinks back towards the core when it cools.
What are the three different types of plate margins?
Destructive
constructive
conservative
What does destructive plate margins usually involve?
An oceanic plate and a continental plate. The plates move towards on another and this movement can cause earthquakes.
What is subduction?
As the plates collide, the oceanic plate is forced beneath the continental plate.
Why does subduction occur?
The oceanic plate is denser than the continental plate
What is a collision margin?
If two plates collide, neither can sink and so the land buckles upwards to form fold mountains.
What direction does the constructive plate margin plates move?
Apart from one another
When the constructive plate margin plates move what happens?
VOLCANO
The magma from the mantle rises up to make (or construct) new land in the form of a shield volcano.
What does the movement of the constructive plates can cause?
earthquakes
What direction does the conservative plate margin plates move?
Past each other or are side by side moving at different speeds
When the conservative plate margin plates move what happens?
Friction occurs and plates become stuck. Pressure builds up because the plates are still trying to move
What happens when the conservative plate margin plates pressure is realesed?
It sends out huge amounts of energy causing an earthquake
