Life expectancy at birth-
What is it?
The average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year.
Indicators of Development:
Infant mortality-
The number of deaths of infants under 1 year per 1000 live birth.
Indicators of Development:
Birth Rate-
Number of live babies born, per 1000 people per year.
Indicators of Development:
What is GNI per capita-
The total income received by the country from its residents and businesses regardless of whether they are located in the country or abroad.
Indicators of Development:
Fertility Rate-
Average number of children that would be born per woman if all women lived to the end of their child bearing age.
What is the stool of development?
It is a model of a stool with three legs. Each leg has all of the different topics a country has to develop before becoming a fully developed country.
What are the three different legs of the stool of development?
- Social
- Economic
- Environmental
Which way will the line of best fit go when there is positive correlation?
Right
Which way will the line of best fit go when there is negative correlation?
Left
What is human development index?
This is a composite score that gives each country a score of between 1 and 0.
What does human development index take into account?
Adult literacy
GOP per capita
Life expectancy
What is the development gap?
Difference in standard of living and well being between the worlds richest and poorest countries.
What are the good institutions ?
Government (democratic elected)
Educations
Military
What are some bad institutions?
Clan based thinking
Corruption- the most corrupts have $10-20 billion in offshore accounts
What are the good culture?
Religion- The more religious the society the power it is.
- People believe life will be better in the next life
- USA is the exception: Mainly Protestant
What are some bad things in geography?
Diseases- tselsefly, malaria
Natural resources - corruption in the DRC, stops them getting rich
Landlocked countries
Low carbohydrate plants mean not a lot of energy from food
What are the signs when a country is developed?
More money invested into:
-Roads
-Hospitals
-Schools.
-Better quality of life
What does HDI stand for?
Human Development Index
What is HDI made up of?
-GNI per capita
-number of years of education
-life expectancy
