Crude Oil Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is a molecule that contains hydrogen and carbon atoms only
How is crude oil separated?
Fractional distillation
What happens in fractional distillation?
Crude oil is heated and they boil off at different boiling points, they condense into fractions, the lower boiling points have fractions at the top and higher boiling points have fractions at the bottom
What are two types of alternative fuels?
Ethanol: from oil or fermentation
Biofuel
What is cracking?
Cracking is taking a long chain hydrocarbon and breaking it up into short chain hydrocarbons ( an Alkane and alkene)
What’s the difference between alkanes and alkanes?
Alkanes have a double bond
How is a polymer made?
Alkenes are opened up to form chains, the chain is called a polymer
How do we make ethanol as a renewable fuel?
From crude oil
Crude oil -> fractional distillation -> cracking -> Ethene -> ethanol
From sugar
Sugar is dissolved in water and yeast is added. The yeast converts the sugar into ethanol
What is an emulsifier?
Chemicals that can help break fats up
What is crude oil?
A mixture of Alkanes which are useless until they are refined
