Crude Oil Flashcards
How can you tell that the substance with the formula C5H12 is an alkane?
It has the general formula, it is a saturated compound. Has no double bonds.
What is the molecular formula of butane?
C4H10
Why are different hydrocarbons collected at different levels of a fractional distillation?
Because the have different boiling points.
What properties would you expect for a fraction that is collected one-third of the way up a fractionating colum?
Medium-high boiling point. Quite oily/thick liquid, not very flammable.
Write a word equation for the complete combustion of ethane?
Ethane+oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water.
Name four possible products of the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon.
Carbon monoxide, carbon, unburnt hydrocarbon, water.
Name the product of incomplete combustion that scientists believe causes global warming?
Particulates.
What two methods are used to reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide produced by burning fuels?
Remove sulfur dioxide from waste gases after the fuel has been burnt. Remove sulfur from fuels before they are burnt.
Name two biofuels.
Biodiesel and ethanol.
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of hydrogen as a fuel?
It produces only water when it is burnt.
It is a gas so it takes up a large volume.
What are fractions?
Liquids from different boiling ranges separated from a mixture of liquids.
