People’s willingness to accept the validity of overly inclusive/generic appraisals.
What is a Schema?
Framework for understanding new experiences/events.
What is Accommodation?
Modifying a schema to fit new data.
What is Assimilation?
Modifying data to fit existing schema.
What is the Assimilation Bias?
Obstacle to clear thinking in which one modifies data to fit schema and reject new data that doesn’t fit.
What is Parataxic Reasoning?
Superstitious belief that events occurring close in time are linked.
What is the Availability Heuristic?
Quickly estimating likelihood of an event based on ease with which instances are retrieved from memory.
What is the Representativeness Heuristic?
Quickly estimating probability that given instance is a member of a particular category.
What is the Representativeness Bias?
The Representative Heuristic producing errors in thinking.
What is the Fundamental Attribution Error?
Overestimate impact of internal personality traits (dispositions) and underestimate environmental circumstances (situations)
