Genre
The classification of cultural products according to familiar, highly legible formulas.
Ex. Film genres such as romantic comedy, horror, action etc.
Hyperreal
A term that refers to a world in which codes are reality and used to simulate cases in which the referent doesn’t exist in the real world.
Intertextuality
The referencing of one text within another.
Ex. The Simpsons incorporates references from films, other television shows and celebrities, which add additional meanings to the shows text.
The intertextual references assume that the viewer is aware of the people and cultural products being referenced.
Irony
The deliberate contradiction between the literal meaning of something and its intended meaning (opposite of literal meaning).
Ex. Saying “the weather is great” when it’s pouring rain outside.
Master Narratives

Ex. Religion, science, Marxism etc.
Polysemy
The quality of having potential meanings, sometimes all at once.
An artwork whose meaning is ambiguous is polysemic because it can have many different meanings to one or different viewers.
Postmodernism
Simulation
Refers to a sign that does not have a real-life counterpart, referent or precedent.
Ex. An amusement park design that mimics the city of Paris can offer a substitute for the actual city.
Structure of Feeling
A term to describe the intangibles (unable to be touched or grasped, not having a physical form) or an era that explain the quality of life and distinct sense of style.
Depending on the given time or context, structures of feelings can emerge, often through the arts, and define the tone of a particular period.
