Q

Flaneur

A

A French term popularized in the nineteenth century that refers to a person who wanders city streets, taking in sights, displays and department store windows.

A kind of window shopping where one gets satisfaction from LOOKING at offerings of commodity culture and not purchasing anything.

Originally a term used for males because women did not have the freedom to wander the city streets alone.

Q

Flaneuse

A

A feminine form of flaneur who strolls through city streets.

A term created because women were originally not given the freedom to aimlessly wander the streets on their own and needed a valid reason to be out in public.
