Common characteristics of a crisis:
- Experience of a sudden event with little or no time to prepare
- Perception of the event as overwhelming or life-threatening.
- Loss or decrease in communication with significant others
- Sense of displacement from the familiar
- An actual or perceived loss
A Crisis (Definition)
An acute, time limited (lasting 4-6 weeks) event during which a client experiences an emotional response that cannot be managed with the clients normal coping mechanisms.
Stages of Crisis Management:
Pase 1
Escalating anxiety from a threat activates increased defense responses.
Stages of Crisis Management:
Phase 2
Anxiety continues escalating as defense responses fail, functioning becomes disorganized, and the client resorts to trial-and-error attempts to resolve anxiety.
Stages of Crisis Management:
Phase 3
Trial-and-error methods of resolution fail, and the clients anxiety escalates to sever or panic levels, leading to fight or withdrawal behaviors.
Stages of Crisis Management:
Phase 4
The client experiences overwhelming anxiety that can lead to anguish and apprehension, feelings of powerlessness and being overwhelmed, dissociative symptoms (depersonalization, detachment from reality), depression, confusion, and/or violence against other or self.
Nursing care:
- Provide rapid assistance
- assess potential for suicide or homicide
- Identify current problem & interventions for resolution
- Take active & direct role w/ client
- Help client set realsitic, attainable goals.
Development of an action plan:
- Short-term, no longer than 24-72 hr.
- Focused on crisis
- Realistic and manageable
