crisis intervention
Normal reaction to abnormal situation.
- varies on lots of factors and btwn people
- care for injury/illness and emotional support
- may refer a patient/athlete to emerg/non-emerg psychological service/hotline
Suicide
leading cause of death (15-19 yo)
Do not place yourself in danger
Alert 9-1-1 most police dept. special trained people
Physical Assault
-scene not always safe, treat as a crime scene (wait for safety/ law enforcement is present)
-do not remove anything unless necessary for tx
Sexual Assault
Acknowledge the emotional support
-often feel degraded, frightened, and at further risk
-try to control your own reaction and focus on the emotional state and the needs of the patient

Treatment for Sexual Assult
- cover the patient and protect them from unnecessary exposure
- same gender responder if possible
- clear bystandard/family
- discourage from shower, changing, douching
- treat as crime scene
- do not question about the specifics
Death and Dying
- has an emotional impact on self and others
- considerate of your language
- provide comfort statements (“we are trying out best”)
Guidelines for Responding
- emotional support & caring for injuries
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- speak in a calm & reassuring manner
- Avoid threatening body language
Mental Health Crisis
c/c is some disorder of mood, thought, behaviour that is dangerous or disturbing to patient or those nearby.
- identify and treat injury/illness, not diagnose or judge
- personal and scene safety
- support and refer
Psychosis
Serious medical condition reflecting a disturbance in the brain function.
- loss of contact w/ reality
- False beliefs
- hallucinations, mania
- confused, disconnected thoughts
- suicidal ideation
- work with their hallucinations, do not ignore (reasoning will likely be ineffective)
Anxiety
Dominant mood is fear and apprehension.
experience persistent, incapacitating anxiety in the absence of an external cause
- hyperventilation
- weak, fatigue
- chest discomfort
- dizziness
- tachycardia
- diaphoresis
- nausea
- smothering sensations
- fear of losing control
Depression
Mood disorder of feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt/pessimism.
- fatigue, change in appetite, disruption of sleep
- death or suicidal thoughts
- restless, irritable
- difficulty concentrating
