Criminal Research Methods Flashcards
1
Q
Lab study Eval. 2v2
A
Pros
- Tight control over extraneous and independent variables means cause & effect can be established
- Easier to replicate due to standardised procedure
Cons
- Low ecological validity as artificial setting may produce unnatural behaviour that doesn’t occur in real life
- Risk of demand characteristics or Experimenter effects (the influence the researcher has on ppt. behaviour
2
Q
Field Study Eval. 2v1
A
Pros
- More likely to reflect real life due to natural setting (high ecological validity)
- Less likelihood of demand characteristics affecting results as ppts. don’t know they are being studied
Cons
- Less control over extraneous variables that could change results. Makes it difficult to be replicated
3
Q
Case Study Eval. 2v3
A
Pros
- Detailed qualitative data as time is focused on a person or event rather than many ppts.
- Can investigate variables or aspects of thinking that would otherwise be unethical e.g. Couldn’t give ppt. brain damage to see effects
Cons
- May not be generalisable as its one person or event
- Most data is qualitative so subjective, leads to observer bias
- Time-consuming and expensive
