Why have we entered a post-modern society?
Because of globalisation. Changes in travel, technology etc
What are the key features of a post-modern society?
Diversity, choice, fragmented, media saturated, consumption
Why are post-modernists critical of big theories?
They prefer to focus on the unique nature of individual criminal acts.
What is a transgressive approach to crime?
Suggests crime should be reconceptualised as people using power to show disrespect for causing some sort of harm to others.
What does Katz discuss?
Argues that crime is seductive. Young males get drawn into it because it is thrilling.
What is edge work?
There is a thrill by acting in ways that are on the edge between security and danger.
What does Foucault discuss?
Surveillance is penetrating ever more private aspects of our lives. Technology provides around the clock surveillance e.g. CCTV.
What are the benefits of increased surveillance?
It makes criminals easier to catch and puts people off wanting to commit crime.
What are the strengths of post-modernism?
Useful contribution to the study of control of crime
What are the weaknesses of post-modernism?
Some are constrained by poverty and so commit crime.
