4/5 convicted offenders are male. More females convicted of property offences, more males convicted of violent or sexual crime, males are more likely to be repeat offenders, males more likely to commit serious crime such as homicide.
What is the chivalry thesis?
Idea that as men are socialised to protect women, the criminal justice system is more lenient towards women when it comes to prosecuting them.
How can the chivalry thesis be criticised?
Morris’ study of sentencing 408 offenders of theft showed that women were not sentenced more leniently.
What does the functionalist sex role theory discuss?
Parsons argues that men take the instrumental role away from home, and women take on the expressive role inside the home which gives girls a role model, but boys reject feminine behaviours like tenderness and distance themselves by engaging in compensatory compulsory masculinity.

What are class and gender deals?
Class deal- if women work, they are offered material rewards (money). Gender deal- if women conform to norms and conventional gender role they are rewarded with material and emotional rewards in family life.
What does the liberation thesis argue?
As women become liberated from patriarchal society, their crimes become as frequent and serious as men’s. Women partake in more masculine crime such as violent and white-collar crime.
What are the patterns of victimisation in terms of gender?
70% of homicide victims are male, females are more likely to know their killer, more men are victims of violent crime, more women are victims of intimate violence, more women report being sexually assaulted.

To come across more masculine- hegemonic masculinity.
