crime&deviance - marxism Flashcards
What is criminogenic capitalism?
The idea that capitalism itself causes inevitable crime.
What did Chambliss discuss?
Crime diverts the publics attention from the exploitive nature of capitalism.
What is the Bhopal disaster?
It was a chemical accident at the Union Carbide India Limited Pesticide plant.
What do Marxists mean by selective law enforcement?
Law enforcement only deal with crimes that they want to. Corporate crimes often go unprosecuted while they focus on working class crime.
What does ideology mean?
Shared ideas or beliefs which serve to justify the interests of dominant groups.
Why is crime seen to be a working-class phenomenon?
Because official crime statistics are mostly working-class crimes as police have stereotypes about criminals and so arrest more working class than middle class people.
What is the difference between white collar crime and corporate crime?
White collar crime is crime committed by an individual within a business whereas corporate crime is a crime committed by a corporation.
Why does white collar crime go undetected?
Because some crimes are victimless, it can be hard for police to figure out large scale fraud and find who is responsible.
What do neo-Marxists discuss?
Working class criminals are still equally responsible for committing deviant acts.
What are two criticisms of Marxist theories of crime?
Theories neglect the role of individual agency and personal responsibility in criminal acts.
They ignore other inequalities like gender and ethnicity.
