New crimes in Modern Britain (3)
Race crime - The 1968 Race Relations Act and the 2006 Racial and Religious Hatred Act made certain crimes racial crimes.
Drug crimes- introduction of the Misuse of Drugs Act in 1971, taking and supplying drugs and now illegal.
Driving offences- speeding, DUI

Changes in policing- motorised transport, some police officers and more armed and look like soldiers, the modern police force has women and people from other ethnic groups

Move towards crime prevention- police community support officers introduced to help communities

Punishment in modern Britain
Abolishment of the death penalty
prison- since 1907 prisoners released on probation
new punishments- community service, electronic tagging

Give two similarities and two differences between the treatment of conscientious objectors during WW1 & WW2
Similarities
COs faced tribunals to decide whether or not they were genuine
Some were given non-combat roles, some were sent to prison
Differences
Tribunals during WW2 were not military, far more COS were given complete or partial exemption in WW2
Those sent to prison were treated far less harshly
Explain why the Derek Bently case was controversial
He did not fire the shot which killed the policeman
He had learning difficulties and a mental age of 10
The words let him have it had several interpretations
Explain 3 significances of the Derek Bentley case
Highlighted the vast differences in punishments for murder as some were hanged and some were given prison sentences
Illustrated how the system of Home Secretary reprieving murderers from hanging was a lottery
Increased the number of people who were critical of the death penalty.
