What is deviancy amplification?
When the media or people in power over exaggerate the extent of a crime making it seem like it is worse than it actually is.
This creates a public uproar and outrage, causing people to want change.
This puts pressure on the gov to crackdown on the particular groups.
Example of deviancy amplification:
Police begin to target boys in hoodies more in public, moving them on and stopping and searching them.
What is moral panic?
A state of fear created by the media over exaggerating the extent of a crime, making it seem like the crime is worse than it actually is or that it occurs more than it actually does.
What is moral panic?
Textbook definition
An increased reporting on some form of antisocial behaviour or negative event. This exaggerated fear or outrage created by the media and its audience is over an issue that has been blown of of proportion by the media in the first place.
These become issues of public concern, about the behaviour of certain groups of people who are then seen to be a threat to the stability of society.
Examples of moral panic:
Knife crime and terrorist attacks.
What is self-fulfilling prophecy?
Individual starts to internalise the label that has been given to them so begin behaving in a way that mirrors the label.
Essentially, the person becomes this label.
What is a folk devil?
A person who is a bad influence on society.
