Staphylococcus aureus
Gram + coccus in grape like clusters
Catalase +
COAGULASE +
Beta - hemolysis (complete)
-> “aureus” = gold yellow pigment
Diseases: wound infection, tonsillitis, pneumonia
MRSA -> ATB resistance
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Gram + coccus in clusters
Catalase +
COAGULASE -
Gamma - hemolysis
Infection of foreign bodies - urinary catheter, heart valve, I.v. Catheters
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Gram +, DIPLO coccus, may form chains,
OPTOCHIN + (ATB sticker on blood agar)
Alpha hemolysis,
Catalase - (all streps are)
Infections: pneumonia, meningitis, (otitis media, sinusitis)
Streptococcus pyogenes
Gram + coccus in chains
PYR test positive
Beta-hemolysis
Lancefield group A
Infections: tonsillitis, scarlet fever (Scharlach)
(May develop AI nephritis, rheumatoid fever)
Streptococcus agalactiae
G+ coccus in chains
CAMP test +
Beta-hemolysis
Lancefield group B (B => for Babies)
Neonatal meningitis
Clostridium perfringens
G + rod, LARGE,
YOLK AGAR, SCS AGAR
produces enterotoxins
Diseases: GAS GANGRENE = clostridial myonecrosis (wound infection)
(Food poisoning)
Bacillus cereus
G+ rod,
Beta hemolysis, pigment production,
SPORES under microscope! (Looks like g- but is not !! )
Diseases: food poisoning (via enterotoxin production)
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
G- DIPLO cocci
Chocolate agar
(Aerobe)
Diseases: gonorrhea (stranguria = painful + frequent urination)
Neisseria meningitidis
G- DIPLO cocci
Chocolate agar
(Aerobe)
Causes meningitis + Petechiae on skin (all others do not cause petechiae)
Haemophilus influenzae
G- rod,
Cultivation in zone of beta-hemolysis of s. Aureus.
Causes:
Otitis media*(any type)
Sinusitis (any type)
Epiglottis (type B)
MENINGITIS (type B)
Shigella dysenteriae
G- rod
