Creams Flashcards
Define the creams
Semisolid preparations containing one or more medicinal agents dissolved in either O/W or W/O emulsion or in another type of water washable base.
The ointment are softer than the creams (t or f)
F the creams are softer
The creams are greasy semisolid preparation (t or f)
F non greasy
What are the ideal characteristics of creams?
1_it should be non-irritant.
2-it should be non-inflammatory.
3-it should be non-toxic
4-its viscosity should be below enough to permit easy spreading.
5-it should penetrate the epiderms.
6_it should liquefy at the body temperature.
What are the advantages of the creams?
1_easy to spread on the skin’s surface.
2-easily water washable.
3_less greasy than ointment.
4non-irritant when applied to the skin.
5-injured area can quickly dried by creams than other semi-solid perparations.
6 gives prolonged contact to their sit of application than any other pharmaceutical semi-solid dosage form.
What are the disadvantages od creams?
1_Stability is not as good as ointment.
2_They are less hydrophobic than other semi-solid preparation, so risk of contamination is high than the others.
Write a short note about the preparation of the creams.
1_ preparation of the oil phase.
2_preparation of aqueous phase ingredients.
3_forming the emulsion.
4_dispersion of the active ingredients.
Write a short note about the incorporation od solid ingredients into creams base.
*Soluble solids and fine powders:
Add to the molten cream at the lowest possible temperature and mixture stirred until cold.
- Insoluble solids:
Incorporated by using tile spatula if there is more than one pawder to be addded, they should be triturated in a morter.
*Coarse powder:
Should be triturated first in mortar and pestle to convert the coarse powder to fine powder, then minimum quantity of cream should be placed in the center of the tile used to levigate the powder to prevent griity texture.
Write a short note about the incorporation of liquid ingredients into cream base.
*Non volatile,missible liquids:
May be mixid with molten cream in water bath.
*Volatile or immissible liquids:
A very small amount of cream should be placed on tile and a made in the center small quantity of the liquid should be folded gently to avoid splashing.
Is an oil in water emulsion based cream
Vanishing cream
It is usually a morning cream and not form a greasy layer on the skin.
Vanishing cream.
What is the emulsifier in vanishing cream?
The emulsifier is formed during formulation of the cream.
The emulsifier is Potassium/sodium stearate which results from the reaction between stearic acid and K/Na hydroxide.
What are the components of vanishing cream?
Stearic acid.
Potassium hydroxide.
Glycerin.
Water.
Many drugs which are incorporated intocreams are hydrophobic and will be released more readlily from an O/W cream than a W/O (T or F)
F from a W/O than O/W
