cranial nerves of the face Flashcards
what is cranial nerve V?
how many branches?
sensory, motor, or both?
trigeminal nerve
3 branches
both
what branch is V1
where does it travel
ophthalmic
thru orbital fissure
three branches of opthalmic nerve
-what does it innervate?
- frontal: sensation to forehead
- lacrimal: goes to lacrimal gland
- nasociliary: cornea, upper part of nasal septum, ethoidal sinuses
what branch is V2
where does it travel?
maxillary
thru foramen rotundum and exits the infraorbital foramen
what branch comes off of maillary nerve
what does it innervate?
infraorbital
-sensation to below orbit, nose and upper teeth
what branch is V3
where does it travel?
what muscles does it innervate?
mandibular
- thru foramen ovale and enters infratemporal fossa
- mastication muscles
what branches off of the mandibular nerve
where does it innervate?
- inferior alveolar: sensation to lower teeth,face/jaw, motor to mylohyoid and ant digastric
- lingual: sensation to ant 2/3 of tongue
what muscles are innervated by facial nerve (CN VII)
- obicularis oris
- obicularis oculi
- buccinator
what are the motor branches of facial nerve
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- mandibular
- cervical
what does the intermediate nerve from facial nerve do?
- taste to ant 2/3 of tongue (w/ lingual)
- secretomotor to lacrimal gland, submandibular gland, and sublingual gland
what symptoms are associated w/ bells palsy
4 of them
- loss of taste to ant 2/3 of tongue
- loss of muscles of facial expression (ipsilateral face drooping)
- dry eyes
- everything really loud
what nerves are afferent and efferent for corneal reflex
afferent: V1 nasociliary
efferent: facial
