cranial nerves for speech Flashcards
pneomenic for cranial nerve names
Oh Once One Takes The Anatomy Final, Very Good Vacations Are Hopeful
pneumonic for motor/sensory cranial nerves
Some Say Money Matters But My Brother Says Brains Matter More
three branches of trigeminal nerve
opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular
CN V
trigeminal
sensation from ANTERIOR 2/3 of tongue
main trigeminal nerve functions
speech, mastication
motor: chewing or mastication
sensory: sensation from the face and scalp, oral and nasal mucous membranes, teeth, tympanic membrane, and anterior 2/3 of tongue
CN VII
Facial Nerve
taste from ANTERIOR 2/3 of tongue
impairment may cause reduced saliva production
facial nerve functions
speech; oral preparation, taste (M and S)
motor: innervates muscle of face (sucking, speech sounds), stapedius, a few others
sensory/taste: provides sensation from skin behind the ear and some auditory structures; TASTE from the anterior 2/3 of tongue
visceral functions: stimulation to two of the three salivary glands, lacrimal glands (tears), and mucous membranes of nose and hard/soft palate
vesibulocochlear nerve function
hearing and balance
sensory ONLY: carries auditory information from the cochlea in the ear
carries balance information from the semicircular canals
CN IX
glossopharyngeal
taste from POSTERIOR 1/3 of tongue
glossopharyngeal nerve
speech, oropharyngeal sensation,
tongue and throat, M and S
motor: one muscle - stylopharyngeus
sensory/taste: sensation from posterior third of tongue, tonsils, skin on external surface of ear, internal surface of tympanic membrane (in ear), and pharynx; taste from the posterior 1/3 of tongue
visceral function: one salivary gland and carotid artery
CN X
vagus nerve (10)
sensation from UPPER part of LARYNX
vagus - means the wanderer in latin
longest cranial nerve
Vagus nerve branches
pharyngeal, superior, recurrent
vagus nerve somatic/voluntary functions
motor: velopharyngeal, pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles
sensory: sensation from external surface of tympanic membrane, exernal auditory meatus, pharynx, and larynx
vagus visceral/automatic functions
visceral sensory: sensation from larynx, trachea, esophagus, thoracic and abdominal viscera, and cardiac structures
visceral motor: smooth muscle and glands of pharynx, larynx, and thoracic and abdominal viscera (to anterior third of large intestine) and innervates cardiac muscle
CN XII
hypoglossal
accessory nerve branches
spinal branch - general motor
cranial branch - general motor (pharyngeal muscles along with vagus nerve)
CN X and part of XI together are called the
pharyngeal plexus
CN XI
accessory nerve
hypoglossal nerve functions
general motor ONLY - muscles of the tongue
accessory nerve functions
speech, head and neck movement (Motor only)
spinal branch – general motor: sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
cranial branch – general motor: pharyngeal muscles along with the Vagus nerve.
vagus nerve basic functions
speech, pharyngeal swallowing (motor and sensory)
