Motor Function
Controls up, down, and medial eye movement and pupillary constriction

Controls down and medial eye movement

Abducens
Motor function
Lateral eye movement

Palpate masseter and temporal muscles for strength of contraction while clenching teeth

Controls facial sensation to light touch, dull, sharp, and temperature
Corneal light reflex (touch cornea with wisp of cotton tip)

Facial Motor and sensory function Inspect face for symmetry Sensory - controls anterior 2/3 of tongue Motor - controls facial muscles

Sensory
Controls hearing and balance
Vestibular Branch - controls equilibrium and balance
Cochlear - Controls ability to hear; do whisper test
Cranial Nerve IX
Glossopharyngeal
Swallowing/gag reflex, tongue movement, taste of 1/3 portion of the tongue
Cranial Nerve X
Sensation of pharynx, larynx, swallowing, vocal cord movement
Innervates carotids and aortic bodies
Cranial Nerve XI
Spinal Accessory
Controls head movement and should shrugs
Also larynx/pharynx function
