Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What is the name of the cranial nerve XII (12)
Hypoglossal
What is the function of cranial nerve 12 or hypoglossal
Allows for control of the tongue muscles resulting in normal speech and swallow
What is the name of cranial nerve nine (IX)
Glossopharyngeal
What does cranial nerve nine or glossopharyngeal do
It has motor and sensory functions.
Elevates the pallet, controls movement of the pharnyx and larynx and contributes to swallowing through control of the Stylopharyngeus muscle.
It also control sensation from the pallet and tongue as well as taste from the posterior tongue and Pharnyx
What is the name of cranial nerve 10 (X)
Vagus
What does cranial nerve 10 or the vagus nerve do
Controls the muscles and receives sensory input from the pharnyx and larynx.
Provides parasympathetic input to the neck thorax and abdomen.
Provide sensory input from the viscera and external ear
What number is the accessory nerve
Eleven or XI
What does the accessory nerve or cranial nerve XI do
It innervates the muscles of the larynx, pharnyx, and trapezius as well as the sternocleidomastoid muscle
Which cranial nerves originate in the medulla
Cranial nerve 12
cranial nerve nine
cranial nerve 10
cranial nerve 11
What is the name of cranial nerve VI
Abducens
What does the abducens nerve or cranial nerve VI do
It innervates the lateral rectus muscle of the ipsilateral orbit responsible for lateral gaze
What is cranial nerve VII called
Facial
What does the facial or cranial nerve VII do
It innervates facial muscles provides parasympathetic supply of the submandibular and sublingual glands and provides taste sensation
What is CN 1
Olfactory
What is CN II and what are deficits associated
Optic
-Difficulty with visual fields- Hemianopsia
CN III
Oculomotor
Controls upward gaze
Deficits: diplopia, strabismus,
