Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What does the
accessory nerve
do?
Controls muscles of the neck and
overlaps with functions of the vagus
What does the
vestibulocochlear nerve do?
Senses sound, rotation and gravity
What 3 things does the
vagus nerve do?
(1) Bronchiomotor innervation to most laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles (2) Parasympathetic fibres to nearly all thoracic and abdominal viscera down to splenic flexure (3) Taste from epiglottis
What 3 things does the
facial nerve do?
(1) Motor innervation to facial expression muscles (2) Taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue (3) Secretomotor innervation to salivary glands and lacrimal gland
What does the
trochlear nerve
do?
Innervates the superior oblique muscle
which depresses, pulls laterally and
intorts the eyeball
What does the
trigeminal nerve
do?
face, sinuses, teeth, etcMotor muscles of mastication
What does the
optic nerve do?
Transmits visual information to the brain
What does the
olfactory nerve
do?
Transmits sense of smell
What 3 things does the
glossopharyngeal
nerve do?
(1) Taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue
(2) Secretomotor innervation to parotid
gland
(3) Motor innervation to
stylopharyngeus
What does the
oculomotor nerve
do?
Innervates all eye muscles except those
supplied by IV and VI
What does the
hypoglossal nerve
do?
Innervates muscles of the tongue
