Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Provides motor innervation to muscles in the neck and upper back, specifically sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
CN XI Accessory Nerve
Responsible for equilibrium and hearing
CN VIII Vestibulocochlear nerve
Innervates the majority of eye muscles and carries preganglionic parasympathetic fibers that synapse at the ciliary ganglion; narrows the pupil and focuses the lens.
CN III occulomotor nerve
Innervates the lateral rectus muscle of the eye
CN VI Abducens Nerve
Provides only motor innervation to the muscles of the tongue
CN XII Hypoglossal Nerve
Responsible for the sense of smell
CN I Olfactory Nerve
Provides both sensory and motor fibers to the face through three main divisions: ophthalmic branch, maxillary branch, and mandibular branch. Can be used by a dentist for anesthesia injections
CN V Trigeminal Nerve
Responsible for providing parasympathetic innervation to the organs in the thoracic and abdominal cavities; synapses with the cardiac, pulmonary and esophageal plexuses
CN X vagus nerve
Functions as a mixed nerve (motor and sensory) that provides innervation to the tongue and throat; primary innervations to the parotid gland
CN IX Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Responsible for vision
CN II optic nerve
Innervates the superior oblique muscle of the eye as it passes through the trochlea
CN IV Trochlear Nerve
Emerges from the stylomastoid foramen and travels through the parotid gland. Provides innervation to all the muscles of facial expression and taste receptors on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue; innervates tears, nasal and salivary glands.
CN VII Facial Nerve
