- Peripheral vision
- Use snellen chart for central vision

Ocularmotor
- follow finger and look for nystagmus
Cranial Nerve 4
Trochlear
- down and inward eye movement
Cranial Nerve 5
Trigeminal
- Muscles of mastication.
- Provides the sensory nerves to the face, scalp, cornea, mucous membranes, and nose. Test sensation by lightly touching the forehead area, cheek, and chin.
Cranial Nerve 6
Abducens
- lateral eye movement
Cranial Nerve 7
Facial
- controls facial expressions
Cranial Nerve 8
Acoustic
- whisper numbers
Cranial Nerve 9
Glossopharyngeal
- uvula, gag reflex
Cranial Nerve 10
Vagus
- talking, swallowing, general sensation from the carotid body, carotid reflex
Cranial Nerve 11
Spinal Accessory
- controls shoulder shrug and head rotation. Tell patient to shrug both shoulders; should be the same level.
Cranial Nerve 12
Hypoglossal
- controls tongue movement. Tell patient to stick out their tongue and move it from side to side. Look for atrophy and asymmetry.
