Olfactory, sensory or motor?

- Sensory
- Take 2 q-tips, add a scent to them, ask the person to close one nostril and have them smell, have them then close the other nostril and, then have both nostrils open and have them smell.

Optic

- ask the person if they have glasses or contacts and if they are wearing them. Have the person stand 10 ft away from the eye exam page, have them cover one eye and read the letter you are pointing to, before switching eyes have them blink a few times and cover the other eye. After that, they uncover both eyes and read.

Oculomotor

- motor
- Get a penlight, and tell the person to look at my nose, shine the light in the person’s eye twice, and then switch to the other eye.

Trochlear

- have the person follow your finger up and down from side to side.

Trigeminal
A
- both sensory and motor
- get a Q-tip show them the hard side and soft side of the Q-tip, have them close their eyes, and ask them to tell you if they feel hard or soft, where on the face and which side of the face.
- put hands on cheeks have asked the patient to suck in air. along with asking them to chew

Abducens
A
- motor
- stand behind the person have, bring 2 fingers up each side until they can see your finger.

Facial
A
- both sensory and motor
- have the athlete frown, smile, etc.
- ask them to taste something and ask them what they tasted.

Vestibulocochlear ( auditory)
A
- sensory
- go behind the athlete and put your hand on the side of their head, make a noise, and see if they can guess what the noise is.
- have the person perform balance activities following the instructor.

Glossopharyngeal

- both sensory and motor
- take a popsicle stick and have the person stick out their tongue and say ah, then give them food and have them eat it and swallow it ( watch the swallow)

Vagus
A
- both sensory and motor
- give the person a sentence or a list of words and have them repeat it back to you
- take a popsicle stick, have the person stick their tongue out, and have them gag.

Accessory
A
- motor
- stand behind the person put one hand on one shoulder and the other hand on their head. Have them resist against our hands. ( front, back, side to side, and shoulders.)

Hypoglossal

- motor
- take a popsicle stick and have the person resist the popsicle stick with their tongue.
