9
Q

The oculomotor nerve has two functions, somatic and parasympathetic motor. What is the description of each?

A
  • Somatic motor function: Supplies four extrinsic eye muscles that move the eye
  • Parasympathetic motor function: innervates sphincter pupillae muscle of iris to make pupil constrict and contracts ciliary muscles to make lens of eye more spherical.

13
Q

The two functions of CN V are Sensory and Somatic Motor. Describe each

A
  • Sensory: Sensory stimuli for this nerve are touch, temperature, and pain.
    • V1: Conducts sensory impulses from the cornea, nose, forehead, anterior scalp, meninges
    • V2: Conducts sensory impulses from nasal mucosa, palate, gums, cheek, meninges
    • V3: Conducts sensory impulses from anterior two-thirds of tongue, meninges, skin of chin, lower jaw, lower teeth; one-third from sensory axons of auricle of ear
  • Somatic Motor: Innervates muscles of mastication (temporalis, masseter, later and medial pterygoids) mylohyoid, anterior belly of digastric, tensor tympani muscle, and tensor veli palatini

Q

This nerve consist of three divisions, opthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3); recieves sensory impulses from face, oral cavity, nasal cavity, and anterior scalp. Also innervates muscles of mastication

16
Q

The somatic motor function of the abducens nerve (CN VI) is…

A

Innervates one extrinsic eye muscle (lateral rectus) for eye abduction

17
Q

Facial Nerve is what cranial nerve

A

CN VII

18
Q

The facial nerve has three functions: sensory, somatic motor, and parasympathetic motor. Describe each

A
  • Sensory: Taste from anterior two-thirds of tongue
  • Somatic Motor Function: The five motor branches innervate the muscles of facial expression, the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the stylohyoid stapedius muscles
  • Parasympathetic Motor Function: Increases secretions of the lacrimal gland of the eye as well as the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.
19
Q

The five branches of the facial nerve are…

A
  1. Temporal
  2. Zygomatic
  3. buccal
  4. mandibular
  5. cervial
20
Q

The vestibulocochlear nerve is which cranial nerve?

A

CN VIII

21
Q

The sensory function of the vestibulocochlear nerve is…

A

Vestibular branch conducts impulses for equilibrium, whereas cochlear branch conducts impulses for hearing.

22
Q

Glossopharyngeal Nerve is which cranial nerve?

A

CN IX

23
Q

CN IX has three functions: sensory, Somatic motor, and parasympathetic motor.

A
  • Sensory Function: General sensation and taste to posterior one-third of tongue; general sensation to most pharynx; chemoreceptor axons to carotid bodies (structures in carotid arteries that monitor levels of CO2 and O2 in the blood)
  • Somatic Motor Function: Innervates stylopharyngeus
  • Parasympathetic Motor Function: Increases secretion of parotid salivary gland
24
Q

The Vagus Nerve is which cranial nerve?

A

CN X

25
Q

The vagus nerve (CN X) has three functions: sensory, somatic motor, and parasympathetic motor

A
  • Sensory: Visceral sensory information from heart, lungs, and most abdominal organs. General sensory information from external acoustic meatus, eardrum, laryngopharynx, larynx
  • Somator motor function: innervates most pharynx muscles and larynx muscles
  • Parasympathetic Motor Function: Innervates visceral smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands of heart, lungs, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and most abdominal organs.
26
Q

The Accessory Nerve is which cranial nerve?

A

CN XI

27
Q

The somatic motor function of the accessory nerve is divided by its roots…

A

Cranial Root: Travels with CN X fibers to pharynx

Spinal Root: Innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoid

28
Q

The hypoglossal nerve is which cranial nerve?

A

CN XII

29
Q

The somatic motor function of the hypoglossal nerve is…

A

Innervates intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles
