Cranial nerves 1 Flashcards
what sort of nuclei are the occulomotor, edinger-westphal and trochlear
occulomotor is general somatic efferent
edinger-westphal is general visceral efferent
trochlear is general somatic efferent
what sort of nuclei are the trigeminal motor
sensory trigeminal nuclear complex
abducens nucleus
trigeminal motor nucleus - branchial efferent
STNC general somatic
abducens general somatic efferent
what sort of nuclei are the
facial
superior salivatory
inferior salivatory
facial -branchial motor efferent
Superior salivatory - general visceral efferent
inferior salivatory - general visceral efferent
what sort of nuclei are the
vestibulocochlear
hypoglossal
nucleus ambiguus
vestibulocochlear - special somatic afferent
hypoglossal - general somatic efferent
nucleus ambiguus - branchial motor efferent
what sort of nuclei are the dorsal motor X, nucleus of solitary tract, spinal accessory
dorsal motor X is general visceral efferent
nucleus of solitary tract is general visceral afferent
spinal accessory is branchial efferent
how can we tell its the midbrain at superior colloculus level
looks like mickey mouse ears upsode down with the superior colliculi being the ears. there are two large red nuclei that are separate
what things do we find at the superior colliculus level of the midbrain
the occulomotor nucleus in the middle and the edinger-westphal nucleus just to the side of it laterally. with the occulomotor nerve coming out of there
how do we tell its the midbrain at the inferior colliculus level
mickey mouse ears with the superior cerebellar peduncles making the ears. but at this level there are no separate red nuclei
what do we find at the level of the inferior colliculus of the mid brain
the trochlear nerves coming from the trochlear nuclei. remember the trochlear nerve does the weird shit where it goes out the back after crossing over.
only cranial nerve to do so
how do we know its the mid pons level
there are many decussating fibres so the spinal tracts are all cut up. darkly stained side areas of the middle cerebellar peduncles. JUST A different shape to the midbrain
also has big old tirgeminal nerve coming out of it
what sorts of things do we find at the mid pons level
the trigeminal nerve coming from the trigeminal motor nucleus. and will have bigger bit of the STNC
how do we know its the caudal pons level
pons shape, decussating fibres, the cerebellar peduncles. has the facial colliculus at the back, no big trigeminal nerve
what do we find at the cuadal pons level
the facial colliculus. being made by the facial nerve going around the abducens nucleus before exiting anteriorly.
how can we tell its the open medulla
has the open part of the 4th ventricle at the back of it. has the olives and the medullary pyramids. with the hypoglossal nerve coming out between
what structures do we find at the open medulla level
the hypoglossal nucleus and nerve
what things do we find at the closed medulla level
the nucleus ambiguus, dorsal motor x nucleus and the nucleus of tractus solitarius
whats my pneumonic for remembering the functions of the cranial nerves
some say back mackenzie but matt bevin says beauden barrett beats mackenzie
