cranial nerves 1 Flashcards
1
Q
what is the name of cranial nerve 1 and what is its target organ
A
- olfactory nerve
- special sensory [smell]
2
Q
what is the origin and destination of cranial nerve 1
A
- origin = olfactory epithelium
- destination = olfactory bulb
3
Q
what is the pathway of olfactory nerves
A
- within the olfactory epithelium there are lots of receptor cells forming bundles which pass through cribriform plate which is part of the ethmoid bone
- ethmoid bone contains lots of holes allowing nerves to pass through
- the afferent fibres synapse in the olfactory bulb
- axons of post synaptic neurone proceed to cerebrum as olfactory tracts
4
Q
what is the ethmoid bone
A
- bone separating nasal cavity from brain
5
Q
clinical test for cranial nerve 1
A
- hold strong smelling substance under each nostril
