cranial nerve 5 Flashcards
1
Q
what is the name of cranial nerve 5 and what does it supply
A
- trigeminal nerve
- skin of face and underlying structures
2
Q
how many branches, names and motor or sensory
A
- ophthalmic - sensory
- maxillary - sensory
- mandibular - sensory and motor muscles of mastication
3
Q
where does the ophthalmic branch leave and what innervation does it supply
A
- leaves cranium through superior orbital fissure
- supplies sensory info to eye and upper part of nasal cavity
4
Q
what are the 3 major branches of ophthalmic
A
- frontal [skin of forehead]
- lacrimal [lateral skin of upper eyelid and blinking]
- nasociliary [medial upper eyelid, upper part of nasal cavity]
5
Q
where does maxillary branch leave cranium and where does it provide sensory innervation to
A
- leaves cranium via foramen rotundum
- sensory innervation to skin from lower eyelid to upper lip, maxillary teeth, palate
6
Q
where does mandible branch leave cranium and where does it provide sensory and motor innervation to
A
- leave cranium through jugular foramen
- sensory innervation to skin of lower lip and chin , lower teeth, anterior 2/3 of tongue and floor of mouth
- motor innervation to muscles of mastication
7
Q
what is the clinical test for function
A
- sharp-blunt test over all divisions - see if patient recognises sharp and blunt
- for motor ask patient to clench teeth ; ask patient to protrude jaw and if there is nerve damage it will deviate to injured nerve
