Cranial Nerve Components Flashcards
what does olfactory ( CN1) carry?
just special sensory, smell. Called a Special Afferent. Note that CN1 is actually a tract, not a nerve, because its part of the brain
what does CNII carry (optic)
special afferent (vision) to the retina
what does CNIII (oculomotor) carry
both visceral and general motor - does the 4 muscles of the eyes (somatic) and does the pupils ( Visceral). So its called general somatic efferent, and general visceral efferent
what does trochlear carry?
general somatic efferent - the trochlear nerve just does the superior oblique muscle of the eye, the pulley one. Keep this separate from levator palpebrae superiorus.
what does CN V carry?
5 has lots of jobs
1) it tells you what the muscles of mastication are doing, and the tilt of the head, and the head’s pain and temp = general somatic afferents
2) it sends out info to the muscles of mastication ( **special visceral efferent)- considered special because the muscles of mastication aren’t from somatices, they are from the gill/folds Doroudi talked about
What does abducens carry?
like trochlear, its just responsible for one muscle in the eye, the lateral rectus - so its just general somatic efferent
what does facial do?
1) motor to muscles of face = facial expression. this is considered a special visceral efferent.
2) It also tells your glands to work ( excluding parotid) = general visceral efferent
3) taste from anterior 2/3rds of tongue- considered special visceral afferents
4) does the sensation on skin behind ear = general somatic afferent
what does CNVIII do, what is its name?
vestibulocochlear- 2 jobs, both special somatic afferents
- balance, hearing
what does cranial nerve IX do?
it has 5 jobs
1) motor to stylopharengeus - Special Visceral Efferent
2) taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue - Special visceral afferent
3) parotid gland - general visceral efferent
4) sensory from back of throat/ pharynx- general sensory afferent
5) gag reflex/ chemoreceptor and baroreceprots from carotid body- general visceral afferent
why is it important that cranial nerve IX has a general visceral afferent component ANND a General sensory afferent component?
1) the gen visceral nerve are what will stimulate the gag reflex, and this goes to nucleus solitarius vs
2) the general somatic afferents are what will iniative the cough reflex, and this info goes to the
spinal nucleus of CN V”
what does vagus do?
5 jobs
1) sensory from spin behind ear- General sensory afferent
2) sensory from larynx, trachea, stretch receptors in aortic arch = general visceral afferents
3) taste in posterior of tongue = special visceral afferents
4) motor to pharynx muscles- SPECIAL somatic efferents
5) parasymp to abdomninal viscera/ cardiac muscle- general visceral efferents
what does cranial nerve XI do?
accessory - responsible for sternocleidomastoid and trapezius: SPECIAL somatic efferents
what does cranial nerve XII do?
hypoglossal does the tongue- general somatic efferents
