Cranial Meninges Flashcards
How many layers of dura mater are there and what are they called?
2:
- outer endosteal layer
- inner meningeal layer
What is the outer endosteal layer of the dura?
Lines the interior of the scull sending blood vessels and fibrous processes into cranial bones
What is the inner menigeal layer of the dura?
Envelopes the CNS - continues down spinal cord as a tube to provide cranial nerves with tubular sheath
What is the falx cerebri?
An arched crescent of dura lying in the longitudinal fissure between the cerebral hemispheres
What is the superior sagittal sinus?
Where the falx cerebri attaches to the cranium
Where is the inferior sagittal sinus?
It is at the free border of the falx cerebri
What are dural folds?
Where the inner layer separates from the outer to form blood filled spaces
What are the dural venous sinuses?
The blood filled spaces of dural folds
What is the tentorium cerebelli?
Dura forming a thick fibrous roof over the posterior cranial fossa and the cerebellum
What are the subarachnoid cisterns?
Spaces between the arachnoid and the pia mater filled with CSF
Where is the cerebellomedullary cistern?
It lies in the angle formed by the dorsal surface of the medulla and the inferior surface of the cerebellum
Where is the pontine cistern?
On the ventral surface of the pons
What is in the interpenduncular cistern?
The Circle of Willis
Where is the interpenduncular cistern?
Above the pons and below the optic chiasma
What is the foramen of magendie?
A midline communication between the IVth ventricle and the subarachnoid space
What is the foramen of luschka?
A lateral communication between the IVth ventricle and the subarachnoid space
What does the pia mater form part of?
The blood brain barrier
Where do the arteries lie in on the surface of the brain?
The subarachnoid space
What does the pia mater act as a barrier between?
The blood vessel and the neurological tissue
What does the blood brain barrier protect tissues from?
Toxic substances
Where are the transverse sinuses?
They run along the line of attachment of the tentorium cerebelli to the occipital bone
Where is the straight sinus?
Within the tentorium cerebelli at its attachment to the falx cerebri
