Cracking Hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
What happens during cracking of hydrocarbons
A
large molecule hydrocarbons are converted into smaller more useful hydrocarbons
2
Q
What are the two types of cracking
A
steam cracking
catalytic cracking
3
Q
what are the conditions for steam cracking
A
crude oil is heated until it vaporises (600-800deg)
the vapours are heated further using high pressure steam
4
Q
what are the conditions for catalytic cracking
A
crude oil is heated to 400deg to vaporise
vapours are passed over a catalyst
catalyst might be aluminium oxide
5
Q
what are the products of these reactions
A
smaller molecules of alkanes and another hydrocarbon ALKENES
