Cracking Flashcards
what is cracking?
Cracking is the splitting up of long chain hydrocarbons using a catalyst
what type of reaction is cracking?
Thermal decomposition (breaking molecules down by heating them)
what are alkenes?
Alkenes are hydrocarbons that have a double bond between two of the carbon atoms in the chain and are known as saturated because they can make more bonds(the bond can split to add more)
what is the formula for alkenes?
Alkenes = Cn+H2n
how is ethanol made?
Ethanol is made either with sugar cane or ethene is reacted with steam
what are the advantages of ethanol?
It is renewable, cheap and a better alternative to petrol
what are the disadvantages of ethanol?
Its is very concentrated and needs to be purified
what are polymers?
Polymers are all types of plastic
what are low density polymers?
Low density polymers are made using high pressures and temperatures to get flexible and light polymers
what are high density polymers?
High density polymers are made using low pressure and low temperatures to get rigid and dense polymers
what are low density polymers used for?
LYCRA for tights, memory foam and hydrogel wound dressings
what are high density polymers used for?
Tooth fillings and biodegradable packaging
