Atoms and Elements Flashcards
what is a proton and where is it found?
Protons are positively charged and have a mass number of one and is found within the nucleus
what is a neutron and where is it found?
Neutrons are neutral as they have no charge and have a mass number of one and is found in the nucleus
what is an electron and where is it found?
Electrons are negatively charged and have a mass number of less than one, unlike protons and neutrons electrons are found within the shells of an atom
what charge do atoms have?
Atoms have no charge/neutral until they gain or lose electrons
what is the mass number in the periodic table?
The mass number is the top number and tells us the amount of protons and neutrons
what is the atomic number in the periodic table?
The atomic number is the bottom number and tells us the number of protons and electrons
what are the number of electrons in the shells?
1st shell = 2
2nd shell = 8
3rd shell = 8
what are compounds?
Compounds are two or more different atoms chemically bonded together
what is ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding is the process where an atom gains or loses an electron to get a full outer shell
what is covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons between two or more atoms to get a full outer shell
