Q

ADULT CPR: How long should each breath last?

A

Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest rise; allow air to exit before giving the next breath.

Note: If the 1st breath does not cause the chest to rise, retilt the head and ensure a proper seal before giving the 2nd breath. If the 2nd breath does not make the chest rise, an object may be
blocking the airway.

Q

How do you give back blows?

A

■ Position yourself to the side and slightly behind the choking person. Place one arm diagonally across person’s chest and bend them
forward at the waist.

■ Firmly strike the person between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Each back blow should be separate from the other.

Q

How do you give abdominal thrusts?

A

■ Have the person stand up and find their navel with two fingers. Move behind the person and place your front foot in between the person’s feet with your knees slightly bent.

■ Make a fist with your other hand and place
the thumb side against the person’s stomach
right above your fingers. Cover your fist with
your other hand.

■ Pull inward and upward to give an abdominal
thrust. Each abdominal thrust should be
forceful and separate from the other.

Q

What do you do if the person is too large to wrap your arms around, pregnant or in a wheelchair.

Q

What do you do if the person becomes unresponsive?

A

If the person becomes unresponsive, gently lower them to the floor and begin CPR, starting with compressions.

After each set of compressions and before attempting breaths, open the person’s mouth, look for the object and, if seen, remove it with a finger sweep.

Q

When pulling an unconscious victim out of the water, what is the first step in CPR?

A

When pulling an unconscious victim out of the water, the first step in CPR is to open their airway by tilting their head back and lifting their chin and then providing two initial rescue breaths.

16
Q

CHILD & INFANT CPR: What is the compression rate per minute?

A

100-120 compressions per minute

Allow chest to return to normal position after each compression

17
Q

CHILD CPR: How do you open the airway?

A

Open the airway to SLIGHTLY PAST-NEUTRAL position using the head-tilt/chin-lift technique.

18
Q

INFANT CPR: What is the hand placement when performing compressions?

A

Thumbs (side-by-side) on the center of the infant’s chest,
just below the nipple line; other fingers encircle the infant’s chest toward the back, providing support

19
Q

INFANT CPR: How do you open the airway?

A

Open the airway to NEUTRAL position using the head-tilt/chin-lift technique.

20
Q

INFANT CPR: What is the compression depth?

A

About 11/2 inches

21
Q

AED: When do you use pediatric pads?

A

Use pediatric pads or pediatric settings for children and infants up to 8 years of age or weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

Note: If pediatric AED pads are not available, use adult AED pads on a child up to 8 years of age or weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

Note: Do not use pediatric AED pads on a child older than 8 years or weighing more than 55 pounds (25 kilograms) because the shock delivered will not be sufficient.

22
Q

AED: When do you use adult pads?

A

Use adult pads for children older than 8 years of age or weighing more than 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

23
Q

AED: Where do you place AED pads on an infant?

A

For an infant, place one pad in the middle of the chest and the other pad on the back between the shoulder blades.

24
Q

True or False? For a choking infant, you do back blows and chest thrusts.

A

True – we do chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts on infants

Turn the infant face-up (support their head and neck) and lower them onto your thigh. Keep the infant’s head lower than their chest.

Give 5 quick chest thrusts about 1½ inches deep with
two fingers in the center of the infant’s chest. Each
chest thrust should be separate from the others.

25
Q

True or False? An AED cannot be used on a pregnant person

A

False – an AED CAN be used on a pregnant person

26
Q

True or False? It is safe to use an AED in rain or snow

A

True – it is safe. Dry off their chest before putting on pads.

27
Q

True or False? if a victim has a body piercing or is wearing jewelry you should remove before using an AED

A

False – try not to put a pad directly on the piercing jewelry if possible

28
Q

True or False? Never shock someone who has a pacemaker or ICD

A

False

29
Q

True or False? Never shock a person who is suffering from traumatic injuries

A

False – heartbeat is #1 priority
