CP Tetanus Flashcards
Toxin
immunogenic, antigenic (dangerous)
toxoid
chemically weakened toxin, immunogenic but not antigenic
active immunization
immunization induced by the introduction of a toxoid into the host’s circulationn
passive immunization
immunization mediated by the introduction of antibodies, not produced by the host, into the host’s circulation.
passive vs active immunity
duration and immediacy
passive - immediate, short lived
active - slower, long lived
homologous vs heterologous antisera
homo antisera - antisera from another human
hetero antisera - antisera from other species
specific immunity
immunity against specific/particular antigen
nonspecific immunity
immunity against multiple antigens
innate immunity
immunity that the host does not need to develop against any particular antigen
acquired immunity
immunity developed against a specific antigen
serum sickness
allergic reaction caused by proteins in antisera from a non-human animal. this is why nonhuman antisera is not used anymore in humans
does a history of tetanus provide long lasting immunity against tetanus?
it does not, because a tetanus infection does not produce enough actual toxin to illicit an immune response. thereforl, someone who is unvaccinated and infected with tetanus mutltiple times will never be able to produce an immune response to it.
