an infectious disease caused by SARS-cov-2 virus
how can the virsu spread
from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing, or breathe
most common symptoms
fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste/smell
less common symptoms
sore throat, headache, aches/pains, diarrhea, rash on skin or discoloration of fingers/toes, and red/irritated eyes
more severe symptoms
difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, loss of speech or mobility, confusion, and chest pain
what is the ace-2 receptor
entry point into cell for the virus that normally modulates BP and inflammation (vital element in RAAS)
how does covid affect the lungs
causes inflammation of alveoli which leads to death of alveoli which reduces respiration that can cause acute respiratory diseases (pneumonia, sepsis)
severe outcomes of covid
more likely to be hospitalized, need intensive care, require a ventilator, or death

older people and people with underlying medical conditions
what are the non-modifiable risk factors for severe outcomes
age and race/ethnicity
what are the modifiable risk factors for severe outcomes
overweight/obese, chronic disease/underlying medical issue, physically inactive, and smoking
define long covid
signs, symptoms, and conditions that continue or develop after acute covid which can include a wide range of ongoing health problems that can last weeks, months, or years
risk factors
most often peopple who had severe covid will get it but other people who can get it are those who aren’t vaccinated and people who didn’t test positive or didn’t know they had covid
general symptoms for lvocid
tiredness/fatigue, symptoms that get worse after effort, and fever
respiratory and heart symptoms
difficulty breathing, cough, chest pain, and fast beating heart
