covalent compounds Flashcards
1
Q
when are they formed
A
Formed by two or more different kinds of non-metal atoms, chemically bonded together. Molecule formed as no charge (neutral)
2
Q
to name a covalent bond..
A
- Full name of first element + second element named as though it is a negative ion e.g. ending in -ide
- Add prefixes to show the number of atoms of each element present
- if first element is singular no mono prefix is needed
- To avoid awkward pronunciation, the final oh or a of the prefix is often dropped when the element name begins with a vowel
3
Q
do elements exist in molecular form?
A
When an element exists in molecule form, it is not considered a compound and so covalent compound naming rules don’t apply. We name them as we would the pure element.
