epidemiology
the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related conditions in the human population
distribution: time, place, types of people affected
determinants: physical, biological, social, cultural, and behaviours that influence health
etiology
the biological cause of a problem or disease. includes internal/external causes.
(aka. aetiology)
endemic
the normal occurrence of a disease or condition common to people within a certain area
outbreak
when cases of a disease are in excess of what we would normally expect to see
this number varies according to what causes the disease and the size/type of previous/existing exposure
epidemic
a disease or condition that affects a greater than expected number of individuals within a population, community or region at the same time
(outbreak is more limited in area)
pandemic
an epidemic that has become geographically widespread, usually across more than 1 continents
