Counterstrain Upper Limbs Flashcards
Where is the location of the supraspinatus tender point?
In the belly of the supraspinatus muscle.
What is the supraspinatus treatment position?
The patient’s arm is flexed 45 degrees, abducted 45 degrees, and externally rotated.
Where is the location of the levator scapula muscle?
In the levator scapula muscle on the upper medial border of the scapula.
What position should the patient be in for treatment of the levator scapula, trapezius, and subscapularis?
Supine
What is the first step in the treatment of the levator scapula?
Abduct the shoulder and slightly flex while monitoring the tender point.
What is the second step in the treatment of the levator scapula?
Withe the patient’s elbow flexed apply a cephalad force through the shaft of the humerus and elevate the scapula.
What is the third step in the treatment of the levator scapula?
Side bend the neck towards the tender point.
Where is the tender point of the trapezius located?
At the junction of the neck and shoulder, in the fibers overlying the supraspinatus muscle.
What is the first step in treatment of the trapezius?
Side bend the cervical spine toward wth slight rotation away until maximum relaxation is felt.
What is the second step in treatment of the trapezius?
Side bend the neck toward the side of the tender point.
What is the third step in treatment of the trapezius?
Flex the shoulder 150-170 degrees.
What is the fourth step in treatment of the trapezius?
Place traction on the arm by pulling in a cephalad direction.
Where is the location of the subscapularis tender point?
At the anterolateral border of the scapula on the subscapularis muscle.
What is the treatment position of the subscapularis?
The patient’s arm is extended and internally rotated.
