Cough Flashcards
What is bronchiectasis?
Permanent dilation of bronchi due to the destruction of the elastic and muscular components of the bronchial wall (usually due to recurrent infection)
Describe the cough that is caused by bronchiectasis
Persistent, green/rust-coloured mucopurulent sputum
What would be seen on the FBC of someone with aspergillosis?
Eosinophils
Recall the management of bronchiectasis
Exercise
Airway clearance therapy
Inhaled bronchodilator
Inhaled hyperosmolar agent
What is an air bronchogram?
Seen on CXR
Bronchi can be seen because of surrounding consolidation of alveoli
What sort of infection is antibiotic use a particular risk factor for?
C. difficile
Describe the cough symptoms of TB?
2-3 week onset
Dry–>productive
Describe the systemic symptoms of TB
Drenching night sweats
FLAWS
What would be seen on biopsy in TB?
Caseating granulomas
What is the most common type of lung cancer?
Non-small cell
Within that - adenocarcinoma
Which type of lung cancer may produce endocrine hormones?
Small cell
Differentiate the CXR findings of SCLC and NSCLC
Both may cause pleural effusion
SCLC: central mass, hilar lymphadenopathy
NSCLC: variable: nodules, lung collapse, mediastinal/ hilar fullness
What are the 2 conditions that can be caused by asbestos exposure?
Asbestosis
Mesothelioma
What is asbestosis?
Diffuse interstitial lung fibrosis
Differentiate where asbestos affects the lung in order to cause asbestosis/ mesothelioma
Asbestosis: alveoli
Mesothelioma: lung lining
