Cosmological Argument Flashcards
Necessary being
Something that MUST exist - it’s illogical for it not to exist. If God exists, he necessarily exists. He has no cause (the uncaused cause)
Contingent being
Something that could have not existed, all things in the world e.g. Human beings, animals, plants, rocks etc
One day it will stop existing e.g. Humans will die
Zeno’s Paradox
There’s a race between Achilles and tortoise. Tortoise head start. Tortoise will win coz whilst Achilles covers distance between them, tortoise has moved on even more. Could happen infinite amount of times.
Kalam Argument
Actual infinity impossible. Trace series of causes back, can’t go on for infinity. Universe must have beginning and cause. Cause is God.
Sufficient Reason
An explanation that requires no further explanations added to it
Leibniz
Even if universe has always existed, it still needs an explanation or sufficient reason for existing. However infinite regress will never give a complete explanation. Universe not self explanatory, so reason for existence must be outside. Must still be a cause not necessarily a first cause
