2 - Matters Of Life And Death Flashcards
Why do Protestants believe it?
Jesus told a thief on the cross that he would join Him in heaven that day. Jesus said His father’s house has many rooms and that Jesus was preparing His followers. Evidence for the paranormal such as ghosts and mediums
What do Protestants believe happens after death?
Body stays in grave, soul goes to God for judgement, good people go to heaven. Some say there is a hell, some say hell doesn’t exist and some say heaven is divided
What do Roman Catholics believe?
Resurrection of the body, immortality of the soul, no sinned since last confession to heaven, has sinned goes to purgatory for cleansing, don’t believe in God to hell, unforgivable acts to hell, Jesus will return to Earth and raise the dead, God will then make a new heaven and Earth
Why do Roman Catholics believe it?
Resurrection of Jesus, teachings of New Testament, the Creed - Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead
What do other Evangelical Christians believe?
Soul stays with body until end of world, at end of world Christ returns, soul and body are judged, good to heaven, bad to hell
Why do other Evangelical Christians believe it?
Jesus’ body was raised from the dead, the Creed - I believe in the resurrection of the body and everlasting life
How do Christians act based on their beliefs?
Confession, prayer, doing good work, putting Christian teachings into action (golden rule) and vocation (doctor/nurse/priest/minister etc.)
What do Muslims believe?
Angel of death takes soul to Barzakh, Allah judges each individual, Day of Judgement body is resurrected, two Angels open book of person’s actions: name on left to Jahannam (Hell) or name on right to al’Jannah (Heaven)
Why Muslims believe it?
Qur’an states we came from Allah so must return, Qur’an teaches we will be judged by Allah, Qur’an teaches God’s judgement is final. Surahs teach that those who lead a good life will be sent to al’Jannah and God is merciful, teaching and practise of the Prohet
Effect of Islamic beliefs on Muslim’s life
All Muslims try to follow teachings of the Qur’an and Shari’ah law, follow examples of Muhammad (pbuh), caring for others (what Allah wants), try to please Allah because of Judgement
Arguments for abortion
Women should have the right to choose (their body), in cases of rape it’s kinder, it’s kinder if the child will be severely disabled, if the woman can’t care for and provide for the baby
Arguments against abortion
Life begins at conception, adoption is an alternative, even disabled children should have the right to life, embryo has potential to become human therefore right to life
Christian arguments for abortion
Jesus taught compassion, can’t be sure life begin at conception, in cases of rape it’s kinder, best choice if mother’s life is at risk, medical tech allows us to discover problems with foetus. LESSER OF TWO EVILS
Christian arguments against abortion
Viewed as murder, life begins at conception, life is a scared gift from God, God has a plan for all, all life has value even disabled, SANCTITY OF LIFE
Muslim views for abortion
Before ensoulment if suffering from serious defect, women should be able to choose, after 120 days if mother’s life is at risk, in case of rape
Muslim views against abortion
Not allowed if product of adultery, if unplanned pregnancy, if after 120 days, if parents think they can’t care for the child, SANCTITY OF LIFE
Arguments for euthanasia
Allows patient to die with dignity, allows them to die without pain, relieves family burden, saves medical costs, medical staff can focus on patients with chance of recovery
Arguments against euthanasia
Sanctity of life, some could be pressurised, hospices provide alternative care, doctors could be wrong with diagnosis, helping with suicide means you have to live with it forever
Christians against euthanasia
Against sanctity of life, seen as murder, only God can take life away, could be used for evil purposes, no one should value themselves worthless, no one should judge the value of another’s life, doctors/relatives could make decisions without involving patients, life should be valued even if in pain
Christians for euthanasia
God intends good quality of life, euthanasia is lesser of two evils
Muslims against euthanasia
Human life is sacred - Allah given, Allah chooses how long everyone should live, part of Muslim’s duty to care for the sick, suffering is a test, seen as suicide not permitted, all life is valuable, don’t interfere with Allah’s plans
Non-religious beliefs in life after death
Offers comfort if they’ve lost someone, near-death experience, paranormal, reincarnation, reward/punishment - makes sense
Non-belief in life after death
Body decays, we shouldn’t believe in unscientific things, no evidence - no one ever returned to prove it exists, mediums are fake, religion is outdated - Bible not as relevant today and God isn’t real so neither is an afterlife
