Why Christians use The Church
It’s the body of Christ, provides rules so everyone knows what to do, God speaks through the Church, only the Church can interpret the Bible and apply it’s teachings
Why Christians use the Bible
Word of God (contains teachings e.g. St. Paul), laws of God, teachings of Jesus and his examples, Bible comes from God so only it can be trusted, Bible been handed down hundreds years and kept Christians on right path, God’s truth does not change
What is the conscience?
Inner feeling of right/wrong, believe it’s voice of God within, both religious and non-religious can judge moral actions, makes us feel guilty if we do wrong
Christians for Situation Ethics
Every situation judged individually, love main principle so genuine Christian action, love is easy to apply and remember, doing most loving thing appeals as positive idea to people, similar to golden rule, Jesus seemed to follow situation ethics
Christians against situation ethics
Impossible to predict what will happen, could be used to justify anything, not easy to apply in cases where we have to follow rules
Human rights important to Christians
Every human being created in God’s image, God loves everyone equally so should be treated equally, Decalogue support human right laws, Golden Rule taught by Jesus
Why is it important to vote?
Allows citizens to have say, elected make decisions that affect everyone, issues include taxes, benefits, schools, health treatment etc. Change can only be brought about through democratic processes
Why use genetic engineering?
Cure genetic disorders, hormones and proteins could be made, organ transplant, inherited disorders could be removed, used to grow crops resistant to disease
Christians for genetic engineering
God gave humans dominion so as long as it doesn’t cause harm it’s acceptable, Golden Rule allows genetic engineering to cure diseases, Jesus healed people so Christians should follow his example, God gave us this knowledge to use
Christians against genetic engineering
God can only give/take life we can’t play God, sanctity of life, Catholics believe life begins at conception and embryos are discarded, defects that don’t cause suffering don’t need to be cured (short-sighted)
