How has the male role changed over the past 100 years?
Traditionally men worked to provide for the family. Men now take a more active role in the raising of children. Men are more willing to do “female tasks” e.g. Cooking
How have female roles changed over the past hundred years?
Women stayed at home looking after children. Women took on jobs of men during world wars. Some women were allowed to vote (1918). Many women wanted equality (1945). Women were given equal pay rights (1970).
How and why roles have changed
Women can vote/become MPs - changes in the law
Women can do any job - change in the law, effect of wars
Women better educated - effective contraception, equal rights legislation
Men mots involved in childcare - changes in attitudes.
Christians against female Church leaders
Bible says women should obey husbands, Bible says women should be silent in Church, Jesus’ disciples were male, Jesus left the church in the hands of St Peter, Eve was sinful, Eve was created from Adam’s rib - Adam came first
Christians for female Church leaders
“God created men and women in his own image” Jesus never discriminated, women followers treated well by Jesus, women first to see him after resurrection, evidence of women leaders in the early Church, Golden rule
Male roles in Islam
Qur’an teaches men should protect women, men should provide for wife and children, should dress modestly covered from naval to knee, should attend mosque for prayer, worship separately to women
Female roles in Islam
Required to have children, expected to look after children at home, dress modestly in loose clothing covered from head to foot, don’t have to attend mosque for prayer, worship separately to men, are free to work and have a career
Government action to prevent racial discrimination
Race Relations Act - unlawful to discriminate because of race/colour etc. illegal to abuse verbally due to race, commission for racial equality - fight racism, “Britishness” test - ensure they have knowledge of British life, Community Facilitation Programme and Neighbourhood Renewal Units - help ethnic minorities learn necessary skills to get jobs
Problems in a multi-ethnic society
Ignorance, racism, discrimination, persecution
Benefits of a multi-ethnic society
Encourages racial harmony, gives a wider variety of music, food, clothes etc. Brings new people with fresh ideas
Why Christians promote racial harmony?
“God created man in his own image” “love thy neighbour” Jesus taught the Good Samaritan that everyone should love each other. Golden rule. “There is neither black nor white…all are one in Jesus Christ”
Why Muslims promote racial harmony?
Allah created all humans, the Prophet declared “there is no difference between Arabs and non-Arabs” ALL races are loved by Allah Prophet declared all people descended from Adam and Eve, Qur’an teaches no race better than another, all Muslims part of ummah (including all races)
How Muslims promote unity
Pray together in Arabic, Muslims from everywhere make the pilgrimage (Hajj) all Muslims fast during Ramadan and all Muslims pray facing Makkah
Benefits of a multi-faith society
Greater tolerance and understanding, varied and rich cultural life (experiences) better understanding of viewpoints, new ways of living and enjoying life
Challenges of a multi-faith society
Not always easy to be understanding towards others’ feelings, have been examples of religious persecution, religious tension exists between faith groups, beliefs of some may be ignored
