Cosmetic dentistry Flashcards
what is value in shade taking
the relative darkness and lightness of a colour on a scale from black-white
what is chroma in shade taking
degree of colour saturation, describes the different shades of the same colour
what is hue in shade taking
the colour/shade
what can cause intrinsic staining
fluorosis, non-vitality, RCT, tetracycline, physiological, endodontic therapy chronological hypoplasia, amelogenesis/dentinogenesis imperfecta, early childhood illnesses
what can cause extrinsic staining
tea, coffee, alcohol (red wine), tobacco use, coloured food spices, chlorhexidine mouthwash, chemotherapy, radiotherapy
what are the treatment options for discoloured teeth
vital bleaching, non-vital bleaching, deep resin infiltration, micorabrasion, composite resin bonding, veneers, crown
what are the risks of bleaching
- existing restorations will not change colour
- transient sensitivity
- gingival irritation
- external cervical resorption
- reduced bonding strength of composite
what are the bleaching concentrations for external vital bleaching
hydrogen peroxide 6% (day), carbamide peroxide 10-16% (night)
what is the process for ICON deep resin infiltration
etching protocol 15% HCl for 120 secs, drying protocol 99% ethanol for 30 secs, dry and observe, deep resin infiltration for 3 minutes
what are the advantages of microabrasion
conservative, cheaper, minimal maintenance required, permanent results, quicker results, easy to perform
what are the disadvantages of microabrasion
outcome is unpredictable, removes 25-75 microns of enamel per treatment, must be performed chairside, requires PPE
what are the reductions for veneer preparation
- cervical enamel 0.3mm
- mid-buccal third 0.5-0.7mm
- incisal third 0.5-0.7mm
