Corynebacterium Flashcards
One of the diseases caused by C. pseudotuberculosis
Ulcerative Lymphangitis (ulg)
ULG infects which animals?
equines (contagious)
Clinical signs of ULG
Inflammation of subcutaneous lymphangitis vessels, formation of nodules, abscesses and ulcers.
Lymphatic becomes corded (harden).
May cause abortion, pyelonephritis and mastitis in equine.
Signs confined to which part of the body?
Distal portions of limbs, particularly hindlimbs
Causes/sources of infection
Poor management, where common in horses picketed together on muddy standings, where they are subject to kicks, shackle chafes and other injuries
Contaminated liter and grooming utensils as fomites
Flies as mechanical vectors
Progression of the lesion
Lesion are painful, progress from papules to pustules, eventually rupture, exude pus and become encrusted,
Disease may persist for weeks to months
Control of ULG
Isolate cases
Dispose soiled dressings carefully, general hygiene and good stable management including manure disposal, fly control and wound preventation
Standings should be kept dry
In other animals such as cattle, deer and camels, cause what?
abscesses and suppurative infections
