Campylobacter spp Flashcards
Characteristics
Gram-negative, motile, non-spore forming
Shape: slightly curved rod that appear spiral
Microaerophilic or anaerobic (3-15% oxygen and 3-5% co2)
In culture, shaped like comma or seagull
Grow on surface of solid medium
Culturation Condition
Incubated for 48 hours
5% oxygen and 10% CO2
Colonies morphology
Colonies are flat, droplet-like, glistening and tend to spread along the direction of the steak on moist agar. Older colonies become white to salmon-coloured.
Under transmitted light, the colonies look like intense red due to the production of cytochrome
Campylobacter jejuni
Secretes toxin which destroy the mucosal epithelial
Location - target epithelial cell (small intestine)
Causes gastrointestinitis - diarrhea
Sporaradic ruminant abortion
Laboratory diagnosis
Fecal samples/poultry meat/milk
Transport media : Campy-thio media (4c)
Isolation media: Colombiua blood agar
Thermophilic/microaerophilic: optimal growth at 42C
PCR
Incubation under increased CO2 and reduced 02
