Cortical Venous Drainage System Flashcards
How does venous drainage occur?
Occurs through a vast array of sinuses and veins.
What is the functions of the venous drainage system?
- Remove deoxygenated blood
- Harmful material
- Circulate CSF from the brain
List the 5 superficial veins.
- Superior cerebral V.
- Superficial middle cerebral V.
- Inferior Cerebral V.
- Superior Anastomotic V
- Inferior Anastomotic V
What does the superior cerebral vein drain and where does it drain into?
Drains superior surface of each hemisphere.
Drains into the superior sagittal sinus.
What does the superficial middle cerebral vein drain? Where does it drain into?
Drains the lateral surface of each hemisphere.
Drains into the cavernous sinus.
What does the inferior cerebral vein drain? What does it drain into?
Drains inferior aspect of each hemisphere.
Drains into the cavernous sinus and the transverse sinus.
What does the superior anastomosis vein connect?
Connects superficial middle cerebral vein to superior sagittal sinus.
What does the inferior anastomosis vein connect?
Connects superficial middle cerebral vein to transverse sinus.
List the 4 deep veins.
- Anterior cerebral vein
- Deep middle cerebral vein
- Subependymal vein
- Medullary veins
What does the Basal veins of rosenthal drain? Where do they drain into?
Drain medial temporal lobes.
Drains into great vein of galen
What does the internal cerebral vein drain and where does it drain into?
Drains the choroid plexus of lateral ventricles.
Drains into the great vein of galen.
What does the great vein of galen drain and what does it drain into?
Drains the thalamus and periventricular regions.
Drains into inferior sagittal sinus and straight sinus.
Where are sinuses located?
Between periosteal and meningeal dural layers.
What do sinuses lack that veins have?
Valves
What is one of the main sinus draining routes?
Straight sinus –> superior and inferior sinuses –> confluence of sinuses –> transverse sinus –> sigmoid sinus –> internal jugular vein
